The O'jays React To Cardi B & Other Popular Artists Of Today
Eddie Levert and Walter Williams– original members of the legendary R&B group The O’Jays – sat down with Buzzfeed Cocoa Butter to give their opinion on today’s popular music artists.
In the hilarious video, the pair gave the unfiltered reaction to chart-topping songs by Travis Scott, Cardi B, Lil Baby & Drake, Sheck Wes
After hearing “Bodak Yellow,” Levert, 76, seemingly commented on Cardi’s feud with Nicki Minaj, who he referred to as “this other girl.” Regarding the song he said, “the young people, they like that [but] the lyrics are just a little bit too explicit for me.”
“I think young people need to tone it down just a little bit on the things they say,” he concluded.
Although Williams, 75, agreed that the Bronx rapper was “an extremely good-looking girl,” he had a differing opinion on her graphic language.
“If she’s over 21, basically she can talk like she wants to talk,” the 75-year-old countered. “That’s what they do and that’s who they are. So, if she’s able to sell the product the way she sang it and the way she’s going about it, I’m down, I’m all for it.”
The singers did not exactly see eye-to-eye on Wes’ single “Mo Bamba,” which Levert called “buffoonery” due to the rapper’s use of the N-word and lyrics about sex and money. While Williams agreed about not liking the context of the song, he added, “he has a right to do it the way he’s doing it.”
The O’Jays final studio album, The Last Word, will be released on April 19. Watch the full segment below.
